Multiple sclerosis is a lifelong condition, but there are treatments available to help manage the symptoms of this disease. Some medical treatments may potentially slow down its progression (disease-modifying drugs). The amount and type of treatment required depends on the individual, as the symptoms and their severity vary greatly from person to person.
Medicines
Symptoms caused by a relapse may be treated with a course of steroids to speed up recovery. Steroids are thought to suppress the immune system and stop the attack on the myelin that surrounds the nerves.
A range of drugs can also be used to treat specific symptoms such as visual problems; muscle spasms and spasticity; pain; mobility problems; difficulty with thought, memory, speech and concentration; emotional problems; tiredness, and bladder and bowel problems.
Disease-modifying drugs
Disease-modifying drugs work by reducing the amount of damage to the myelin that surrounds the nerves in the nervous system. This type of drug is sometimes prescribed for people with relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis, or for people with secondary progressive multiple sclerosis, as relapses are common.
Other treatments
In addition to prescribing medicines, there are various methods that can be used to help manage some of the symptoms of
multiple sclerosis
